A common exclusion in household insurance
A common exclusion in many household policies could stop many victims of the floods from being able to claim on their household policies. Many popular insurers do not accept claims from groundwater flooding which can cause a lot of problems for people trying to fix their houses.
Groundwater can be defined as sub-surface water that makes its way into structures when it arises from the ground upwards. i.e. persistent rainfall which leads to flooding of sewers which makes its way into a person’s premises.
Unfortunately statistics show that the recent floods have around one quarter of the cases being defined as floods resulting from groundwater. However, the majority will see that most of the destruction was caused by rivers bursting their banks which will be covered most insurers.
