The Film Society of the Year Awards took place earlier this month to celebrate volunteer-led community cinemas and film societies.
Film Societies have a positive impact on communities across the UK, and offer a type of experience that is often absent when visiting mainstream cinemas.
Not only do we have avid movie watchers within the WRS team, but we also provide an insurance service for film society groups and clubs; so you can only imagine our delight when we were once again offered an opportunity to be involved in the annual Film Society of the Year Awards, which was held on the 3rd of October, at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield.
The awards were hosted by Cinema For All, who are the national organisation for the development and support of the film society and community cinema movement in the UK. The evening involved celebration and recognition for volunteer-led community cinemas and film societies. We have had the privilege of sponsoring the event for a few years now, and this year we supported the Best New Society – a big well done to Reel Equality who won the award! Managing Director of Cinema For All, Deborah Parker said that Reel Equality ‘seemed to arrive fully formed as a club.’
Reel Equality schedule monthly screenings for people who ‘love film and hate sexism.’ Apart from their interest in films, the film club also carry out inspirational work among children and young adults, and also help raise awareness on domestic violence.
We would like to extend our congratulations to all nominees – you are all worthy winners.
