Our Charity Insurance team recently conducted a survey on people’s planned charitable giving over the festive period this year compared to last year. The results reveal that despite the financial pressures many are facing, Brits are continuing to show incredible generosity.

More than a third (37%) of kind-hearted residents across the country say they are more likely to donate to charities at Christmas, while 96% say they’ll be donating more or around the same amount to good causes as last year, despite financial strains.

Three-quarters (75%) of survey respondents stated their main reason for donating to a cause was a personal connection, while over a third (38%) said they had been prompted by social media posts.

The most popular causes were animal charities (56%), community charities (45%), good causes working with children and young people (39%) and health charities (30%).
The research found the spirit of giving continues to be strong across the UK – even with continuing economic uncertainty and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis forcing people to make difficult financial choices.

When asked what factors would influence their decisions around giving, more than seven in ten (71%) respondents stated the increased cost of living, while over half (57%) cited changes in their own financial situation.
Despite these growing concerns, just 3% of respondents said they would donate less this year, showing generosity and support for charities remains even when people are struggling themselves.
Gungor Baykan, Head of Broking and Operations at WRS Insurance Brokers, said:
“The festive season is a critical time for many charities as they struggle to meet demand on top of rising costs and economic uncertainty.
“These financial pressures are also being felt by households across the country, but despite this they are once again stepping up to provide vital support to good causes – both financially and through acts of service.
“Our research shows people’s commitment to giving is as strong as ever, which is incredibly inspiring and I know charities across the UK will feel the benefit of this generosity.”
