The New Year’s Honours list is published by the UK’s Cabinet Office and recognises British people for excellence across a wide range of things, from charity work, to arts, politics and sports. As charity insurance experts we were thrilled to see not one, but two of the founders of our charity clients on the list this year.
Katie Piper, founder of The Katie Piper Foundation, was awarded an OBE. Katie is an activist, author and broadcaster and was the victim of an acid attack in 2008. She suffered life-changing burns which left her partially blind with severe scarring to her face and other parts of her upper body. Katie went on to founding The Katie Piper Foundation which sets out to provide “a brighter future for all survivors of burns and scars”. Currently The Katie Piper Foundation is being approached for help for 5 times more survivors of burns than before the pandemic, and over half of these people have thoughts of suicide. Chris Hickford, founder and chief executive of The Eikon Charity, has been awarded an MBE in recognition of his 35 years of service to vulnerable young people. The charity supports children and young people to overcome difficulties, become resilient and develop into confident adults who contribute positively to their communities. In a news release published by the charity, Chris said: “I feel very honoured to have been awarded an MBE, but I feel a bit of an imposter. So many people have contributed to Eikon’s success over the 27 years, each of them bringing expertise and dedication, or donating so generously, and it’s important that they are recognised in this award.”
